Autumn Harvest Bourbon Ginger Fizz

Bourbon cocktail with ginger syrup and sparkling apple cider.

The countdown to Thanksgiving is on and I love this time of year so much. The air is crisp and the weather cool but not cold. Autumn is showing off her colors outside my window, magazines and newspapers are filled with pie and side dish recipes and most of us are placing our turkey orders. But let's not forget the cocktails.

Yes there will be wine with dinner and guests are usually great about bringing bottles. But I like to start off the gathering with a signature cocktail. I have it ready in a large pitcher and guests pour their own while nibbling on the appetizers I've set out.

An easy way to make the drinks even more festive is to rim glasses with gorgeous colorful sugars and have them ready on a tray for guests to take. I mean, who can resist these sparkling beauties? Dell Cove Spices is my go-to for seasonal sugars and this blend, called Sweet Autumn, is perfect for my Thanksgiving harvest cocktail. And, not only is it beautiful and delicious but it allows for my favorite aspect of holiday prep which is the ability to make ahead. Cheers!

Recipe for a bourbon cocktail with ginger syrup and sparkling apple cider.

ingredients:

2 oz. Bourbon
1 oz. Ginger syrup (recipe follows)
1/2 oz. Lemon juice
4 oz. Sparkling apple cider

For the Ginger Syrup:
1/4 Cup sugar
1/2 Cup water
4" knob of fresh ginger, peeled and sliced

For the Rim:
1 Tablespoon corn syrup

instructions:

Add the sugar and water to a pot and simmer until the sugar has dissolved. Add the sliced ginger, bring to a boil and remove from the heat. Allow to cool before using or refrigerate overnight for maximum flavor. Strain out the ginger pieces and store for up to a week in the refrigerator.

Pour a tablespoon or two of the rimming sugar into a shallow bowl. Brush the edges of a cocktail glass with the corn syrup and roll in the rimming sugar. Place in the freezer for a few minutes to firm up while you make the drink.

Add the bourbon, ginger syrup and lemon juice to a cocktail shaker. Fill with ice and shake well. Pour into the prepared glass and top with the sparkling apple cider.
