We're kind of in that shoulder season between all the good winter citrus and all spring fruit. Coming home from the market with a load of beautiful pink grapefruit, I stopped to admire the first flowering tree on my block. A perfect example of where we are right now.
I love grapefruit cocktails and the salty dog is one of my favorites. Vodka and grapefruit juice with a salty rim, served in a tall highball glass. A greyhound, by the way, is the same drink but with gin instead of vodka.
I like bubbles in this type of refreshing drink, though. At first I looked for a grapefruit soda but spotted this grapefruit beer. I'm not normally that much of a beer drinker but I decided to give it a try and found a real winner. High in grapefruit flavor and low in beer flavor which suits me. But any hard grapefruit soda would be great here. Tall, cool and ultra refreshing. Cheers!

- Place some coarse salt in a shallow dish. Run a cut grapefruit around the edges of two highball glasses and dip into the salt. Refrigerate for a few minutes to set.
- Add the vodka and grapefruit juice to a cocktail shaker. Fill with ice, shake well and pour into the prepared glasses. Top with the grapefruit beer or soda and garnish with slices of pink grapefruit, if desired.
