Cape Gooseberry Gin Smash

Gin cocktail flavored with fresh cape gooseberries and elderflower liqueur.

Have you ever tried cape gooseberries? Some of you might be saying you've never even seen them and, that's possible. They're definitely a specialty fruit so more likely to be found at a gourmet store or large farmer's market. But you also might have seen them and just walked past.

They're covered in a papery skin that hides the bright golden yellow fruit. So much so that they could be mistaken for tomatillos if you're not looking carefully. Not exactly inviting and I admit it took me years before I finally bought the container and decided to see what this mystery was. The truth? I also thought the papery covering was beautiful and was intrigued just by that.

Happily, cape gooseberries are delicious! Once you peel off the wrapper and get over the fact that they feel a little sticky, you get a perfect sweet and sour taste. I thought about baking them into a pie but I found them so refreshing that I figured a cocktail would be first up. Paired with the fruitiness of gin and the perfume of elderflower liquor, this drink goes down fast and easy. I suggest you make a whole pitcher full. Cheers!

  1. Fun to see your recipe! I had the same intro to gooseberries...and the same response - how can I use this in a cocktail? My version: 6 berries ( interesting we landed on the same number), 1.5 oz gin (I like something citrusy, like Shot Tower gin from Baltimore), 1 oz cocci Americano, .25 Meyer lemon juice, .25 simple, 2 large basil leaves. Muddle berries, gin and basil; add remaining ingredients, shake on ice, double strain into chilled coupe, garnish with a small basil leaf floated on top.

    1. Rosemary sprigs go better than basil
