Air Fried Doughnut Puffs

Air Fried Doughnut Puffs

I've been having fun testing recipes in my air fryer so it was only a matter of time before I tried something sweet. Doughnuts are such great deep fried treats so I obviously had to see how they would do without the oil.

I've made quite a few baked doughnuts before but those have a looser texture and are cooked in a doughnut pan. But this dough needed to be firmer to be able to stand on its own inside the air fryer basket.

It took several tries to get the mixture to hold together during the cooking but still have an airy consistency when cooked. These puff up nicely in the air fryer so, even though it's a cake doughnut base rather than a yeast version, the texture is crisp on the outside and light on the inside. They're great with a glaze as well but I loved them with a dusting of powdered sugar and a cup of tea for an afternoon snack. Enjoy!

Recipe for mini doughnut hole puffs cooked in an air fryer.

Ingredients:

  • 1 Egg
  • 2/3 Cup sugar
  • 3/4 Cup buttermilk
  • 4 Tablespoons unsalted butter, melted and slightly cooled
  • 1 Teaspoon vanilla
  • 2 Cups all purpose flour
  • 2 Teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 Teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 Teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 Tablespoon melted butter for coating
  • Powdered sugar, for coating

Instructions:

  1. Whisk together the egg, sugar, buttermilk, melted butter and vanilla until smooth.
  2. In a separate bowl, stir together the flour, baking powder, salt and cinnamon. Stir the dry ingredients into the wet.
  3. Turn the dough out onto a well floured surface. Note that it will be very sticky but will quickly become easy to work with as you flour it.
  4. Roll it out to approximately 1" in thickness and, using a 1 1/2" cutter, cut out rounds.
  5. Brush the air fryer basket with melted butter. You will only need a touch but it's important.
  6. Place as many dough rounds into the basket of your air fryer, brush with melted butter and cook at 350 degrees for 9 minutes. The dough will not spread much but it will puff up. Dust generously with powdered sugar and serve fresh for best texture. Makes about 2 dozen puffs.

  2. DELISH !!! Can you substitute a cooking method as I do not have an air fryer?

    1. Hi Barb! In this case, the dough will not work well in another cooking method. However, if you go to the recipe index on the top bar and search under doughnuts, you'll find quite a few delicious versions that are meant to be baked in the oven.

  5. Just made these!
My brain refuses to believe they are doughnut holes but my mouth is not judging. They are too dense to taste like donuts, but it is necessary for the air fryer. The flavor though is great!!! Even without powder sugar they are amazing bite size sweet snacks. I made them 1” as I have a small fryer.
I have leftover dough, do you think it can be refrigerated, o frozen and thawed out to use later? Will definitely make again!

  6. So glad you liked them. I have not tried refrigerating or freezing but I would think both would work just fine.

  7. Mine did not puff up like the recipe or have a crispy exterior. I am a seasoned baker so I’m not sure why. They are super tasty with some cinnamon sugar in the top. Yum
