Frozen Monkey Cocktail

Recipe for a frozen banana and coffee drink with both an alcoholic and non-alcoholic option.

I've been starting to plan a Mother's Day menu and thinking about beverages. It's going to be brunch so a little something with a kick would be appropriate, not to mention fun. But I also need a low octane version for anybody who wants to keep it non-alcoholic. And I want it cool and refreshing because, spring, so I should probably start with some kind of fruit. Decisions, decisions.

As I was browsing around the berries in the fruit section of my market, I also grabbed a bunch of bananas for me for the week and that got me thinking about just using them as the fruit. Even though I tend to use them more in smoothies, I remembered an amazing banana and Irish cream cocktail from a few summers ago and knew I had to play on those flavors. But I wanted something that could be made non alcoholic without affecting the taste.

Coffee!!! In a play on a dirty monkey drink, I used a coffee liqueur in the cocktail version and regular cooled coffee in the non-alcoholic version and got basically the same taste. My cocktail uses vodka for a kick but omitting that doesn't affect the flavor at all. I made it cool and creamy in a blender and it's a winner. Mother's Day brunch is going to be fun. Enjoy!
