Life in the Big City - Spring in My New York

Life in the Big City - Spring in My New York

Lately I've had several out of town friends plan visits to New York and, of course, want to know where to go and what to see. In a city like this, there's no short answer to that question because you could plan dozens of trips and never see the same things twice. And I appreciate that tourists do what tourists do, just as I do when I'm a tourist in another state or country. Still, it hurts my heart to think that anybody's view of my lovely city goes no further than Times Square and the Naked Cowboy.

Those of us that grew up here and live here know the beauty of the hidden and lesser known. And so, with beautiful weather finally here, I grabbed my camera and my four legged assistant and I'm taking you around my New York. It's not as glitzy as the lights of Broadway but I hope you enjoy this little tour of my home.

It's an Island

We can reach the rest of civilization through impressive bridges, massive underwater tunnels and boat docks but I love that I can be in the city yet still hear the sound of shore birds and see this view from my window.

An Urban Garden

If you think we're all tall buildings and concrete, look again and you'll see the city bloom.

Straight From the Farm (in the city)

Sure we have supermarkets but we're far more fond of our farmer's markets. And they're a regular Saturday morning stop for me. Just 1.5 hours north of the city is where the true beauty of the state comes into view. And the dairies, orchards, vineyards and farms that supply most of the fantastic food for which we're so famous send their bounty down to the city's green markets.

Look Up!

Not all the buildings are tall, depending on where in the city you are. Old Upper East and Upper West side brownstones and classic West Village houses are gorgeous, and expensive, reminders of old craftsmanship. And any private outdoor space is coveted, like that little garden up there that just has my name on it!

Door Beauty

I never thought much about doors until I started seeing how elaborate some of them are. Form and function combined into true art.
